‘It’s complicated’ status more prevalent now

it appears that young people approx 18 to 25 do not have an exclusivity contract with each other & ‘it’s complicated’ is the status that is more likely to be the status quo.  The big C (by that I mean commitment) is a bit out of date now but of course this can cause problems in any relationship, both health & psychological issues.

relationship game: to play or not?

I read over the holidays about a recent study that appeared to confirm that people are more attracted to others when they are uncertain of their attraction was reciprocal.  This of course then confirms that in the relationship game you may need to be willing to play to experience success.  Although my disclaimer is that authenticity will deliver an authentic match, so it may be a fine balance between playing games & being true to yourself?

online dating: altered reality?

online dating is an altered reality, very different from real world meeting people who come across our path, or who we get introduced to by well meaning friends who find our singleness uncomfortable.  It may not be the answer to the real world problem of finding a mate for everyone because it doesn’t have a high success rate.  It’s great when you meet a happy couple who have escaped the odds & found each other online.  But there are probably many more stories about disappointment & dis-spiritedness than we can even imagine.  So many people looking for love and not enough getting that from online dating.

social media is making us more social

a study in Texas has decided that social media is making us more social.  Who would have knew?  Good news for facebook, I think, because their privacy issues & ownership of our data still give me great concern.  However social networks do provide a great platform for us to keep in touch with friends & family, no matter where they are in the world!  It seems everyone likes to complete their relationship status, as per the pie chart below:

short attention span?

Gen Y who have come of age, are shaping the current social & technological environment.  I also note that as regards relationships & partners as a culture we may be suffering from a short attention span?  I was recently speaking with a guy who told me that their 17 year old daughter’s boyfriend broke up with her via email and I asked was she upset.  ’No not so much, she wasn’t really interested anyway, she is focusing on her studies!’  To me something is missing here, wot about some human courage & contact to finish as you started, but heh that’s just me!  Maybe as a culture we are suffering ADD???
