Misrepresentation
Recently reading about the MySpace ruling last month on the MySpace suicide case in CNet news. The article which was titled MySpace ruling could lead to jail for lying online daters quoted about the impacts of this ruling on the web:
Web site terms of service, which end users universally ignore, suddenly have teeth: violating them is a federal hacking offense, punishable with jail time. The days of being able to freely lie on the Web could be coming to an end. This could mean serious trouble for people who lie about their age, weight, or marital status in their online dating profiles.
There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics. Benjamin Disraeli
Misrepresentation or lying is a big problem in relationships but particularly online.
Tact is to lie about others as you would have them lie about you. Oliver Herford
When I was recently looking at AstraMatch blog analytics, I noted that the keyword that brought the most people to this site was the word intimacy. I note that the word intimate comes from Medieval French & is a back-formation from the word intimation meaning the “action of making known”. How can we be known if we are not being real?
Relationships can’t survive without honesty between partners. Relationships can’t really start without honesty between partners.
The most common lie is that which one lies to himself; lying to others is relatively an exception. Friedrich Nietzsche
I wonder how online behavior would change if we were faced with threat to our freedom from the law if we were not authentic. Not sure how this could be enforced when misrepresentation or lying is so common in the real world. Recently it has been exposed that many businesses, banks etc lie even in their business models????
Women lie about their age; men lie about their income. William Feather
Web 2.0 encourages authenticity and social networks provide us all with the opportunity but still we find that people still lie….. As with the banks recent demise, we then find it hard to trust. Trust is the golden thread that connects us with each other & Life. How can we develop trust with each other & in our lives & relationships.
If you do not wish to be lied to, do not ask questions. If there were no questions, there would be no lies. B.Traven
Comedy & humor are great ways to be more honest as truth can be exposed with less discomfort whilst we are all having a good laugh. How do you support authenticity in your relationships? Let me know in the comments below, I would appreciate your ideas.
I will leave you with a funny video by Eddie Izzard, a favorite comedian of mine, where he talks about lying machines. Enjoy…..
