what do men want from online dating?

this week I would like to focus on what men want from online dating?  Obviously I do not know the answer to this first hand, being a woman, so need to rely on others to obtain this information.  I read a great article on Live Science: ‘What Modern Men Want in Women’ by Sally Law which gave results of a current study:

Researchers at the University of Iowa find that men increasingly are interested in intelligent, educated women who are financially stable — and chastity isn’t an issue.

The findings are part of a study, conducted every decade since 1939, which asks participants to rank a list of 18 characteristics they would want in a partner on a scale ranging from “irrelevant” to “essential.” Male and female participants in 2008 rounded out their top traits with “dependable character” and “emotional stability, maturity.” Men ranked intelligence fourth, a big jump from 11th place in 1939; in addition, “good financial prospect” moved to 12th place in 2008, a shift from its low 17th-place ranking in 1939 and last-place ranking in 1967.

In an article from UPI.com Women want relationships, men prefer sex research was assessed on what men

Given a choice, men prefer “hooking up” to dating, while women prefer dating with the prospect of a relationship to causal sex, U.S. researchers said.  The study, published in the journal Sex Roles, found women seemed to want a relationship more than men, but women fear, whether dating or in hooking up, they will become emotionally attached to a partner not interested in them.  The study also found men seemed to value independence and they feared that even in hooking up, a woman might want to have a relationship.  In addition the study found, 41 percent of the women strongly preferred traditional dating to hooking up, 20 percent of the men strongly preferred dating, while 2 percent of the women strongly preferred hooking up and 17 percent of the men strongly preferred hooking up.

NewScientist discussed men’s preference for women’s shape in ‘Men prefer averagely shaped women’:

The work, by Rob Brooks at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, and colleagues, suggests that the popular notion that a waist-hip ratio of 0.7 is the most attractive only holds if the rest of the body is average.
