left or right brain?
we all have different development as regards our brains and this can strongly affect how we relate and who we relate with. It is helpful to understand & know our own leaning or orientation and what parts of the brain we may need to develop. It is often the undeveloped that we may be attracted to in others but it is important that we try to develop this so we can see all sides of the picture (or should I say brain?)
Let’s have a bit of fun so check out this picture and identify which way the girl is moving, then look again to see if changes? Check out this link to find out whether you are Right Brain or Left Brain
Clockwise – you are more right brain function (feeling) and anticlockwise – more left brain function (logic). For all those who can see both – good work – you have access to both sides which helps in life & relating.
You can even take a brain hemisphere assessment at this link Hemispheric Dominance Inventory Test & see how you score. I veered more towards the right side but was almost equal for both halves. I am also licensed in the Hermann Brain Dominance Instrument which divides the brain into 4 components.
- Analytical thinking Key words : logical, factual, critical, technical and quantitative. Preferred activities : collecting data, analysis, understanding how things work, judging ideas based on facts, criteria and logical reasoning.
- Sequential thinking Key words : safekeeping, structured, organized, complexity or detailed, planned. Preferred activities : following directions, detail oriented work, step-by-step problem solving, organization and implementation.
- Interpersonal thinking Key words : kinesthetic, emotional, spiritual, sensory, feeling.Preferred activities : listening to and expressing ideas, looking for personal meaning, sensory input, and group interaction.
- Imaginative thinking Key words : Visual, holistic, intuitive, innovative, and conceptual. Preferred activities : Looking at the big picture, taking initiative, challenging assumptions, visuals, metaphoric thinking, creative problem solving, long term thinking.
We even have the freedom to develop both sides of the brain in this day & age! Of course in relationships at least being a little versant with the right brain & feelings helps because after all we wouldn’t need to relate to others if not for our feelings.
The feeling side of our nature leads us to relate through our vulnerabilities. It feels good to relate to others when we are connected to this part of us and we don’t feel alone with our troubles or worries. The logic part of the brain can spin us lines about how we don’t need others, particularly a partner that may have become more right brained & needy lately???? It is so important to strike a balance between the two sides of the brain, and our nature. Too much relating can be overwhelming for the individual psyche and not enough is cold and lonely! A compromise is always best, where both sides figure equally and get their (your) needs met. Both are relevant, cause both sides of the brain exist. It’s up to us whether we use or develop them really! If we are in touch with achieving this balance in ourselves then our relationships automatically benefit from the balance.
Here’s a great video from Amnesty that holds Freedom as its cause, and there are some hysterical comedians featured, enjoy….
