menage a trois

Having another person involved in a relationship in any capacity immediately changes the dynamic between two people. This can be a positive experience or it can shatter a couple’s trust, depending upon the attitude of the individuals involved. Some of the possibilities are:
- When a relationship’s energy or good feelings are dumbed down by time & habit, one or both parties may venture outside the relationship & have an affair with another

- When a couple shares their living space with a family member or friend, that person may become connected to the relationship dynamics
- When there are problems in a relationship, a couple may seek advice, counsel or coaching from a third party in a professional capacity

- Sometimes a child may affect a couple’s dynamic
- When one partner or both have a close, confidante friendship (not romantic but disclosing) outside the relationship

Some of the effects for a couple being connected to another person are:
- New awareness and valuation of the relationship renewing commitment & promise for a couple
- Undermining of basic trust between two people through negativity about the other
- Expands the horizons & interests of both people in the relationship
- May challenge bad or negative habits that occur unconsciously between a couple
- Better awareness and confidence for each individual within the partnership
- Re instill value for a partner due to awareness that they may leave — this is highly personal & is not a generally recommended cure for relationship ailments

The bottom line and question that needs to be asked by the couple about others connected to their relationship:
Does this person help build trust between us or undermine it?
